Concert pianist and Steinway Artist Dr. Joseph Irrera holds the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music, Master's Degree from the Peabody Conservatory, and Bachelor's Degree from the Eastman School of Music. Additionally he has studied extensively throughout Europe.
Dr. Irrera has over 17 years of teaching experience, having served on the faculty at the Eastman School of Music, Hobart & William Smith College, and has conducted masterclasses at numerous universities and summer music festivals across the United States. His students have won national and international piano competitions, performed with orchestras, and have been accepted with scholarship to music conservatories including the Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, and University of Michigan, among others.
As a performing artist, Dr. Irrera has concertized throughout the U.S. and internationally, both as a soloist and together with his brother John as The Irrera Brothers Piano & Violin Duo. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle cited him as a “local prodigy,” and at the age of 18 he made his concerto debut with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. Subsequently Dr. Irrera has appeared as guest soloist with orchestras across the country including the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Pacific Chamber Orchestra, Penfield Symphony, Genesee Symphony Orchestra, and Georgia Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Irrera has been invited to perform at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, as well as throughout Europe and Latin America. His recordings of both solo and duo repertoire can be heard on the Centaur Record label as well as with Steinway & Sons Piano.
